Foreword:

Special bioeconomy edition

Europe’s bioeconomy stands at a defining moment. With the launch of the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy, the focus is now squarely on transforming research excellence into industrial strength, on scaling up innovation and attracting the level of investment required to compete globally – and to do this fast. The ambition is clear: to create a thriving circular European bioeconomy that can deliver sustainable growth and lead the green industrial transition.

As this special bioeconomy edition of Projects Magazine demonstrates, the talent and ingenuity needed to achieve that vision are already here. Across Europe, remarkable research teams are turning ambition into action, supported by the strategic alignment of the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), both of which play a vital role in bringing research and industry closer together, accelerating marketable innovation.

Within these pages, we see clearly how this collaborative model is working in practice. Projects such as BioBoosters are empowering regional ecosystems through innovation hackathons that connect SMEs, researchers and entrepreneurs to accelerate circular solutions. CIRCUBATT is pioneering battery circularity by designing for reuse, recycling and sustainability in the fast-growing EV battery and energy storage sector. EXPLORA is pushing the frontiers of bio-based aviation fuels, converting renewable feedstocks into viable alternatives that could help decarbonise long-haul transport. FUELGAE takes this further by advancing next-generation biofuels through cutting-edge microbial and process innovations.

Meanwhile, LUCRA is reimagining how Europe produces key platform chemicals like succinic acid, transforming waste into high-value feedstock for industrial applications. MIBIREM is harnessing the power of microbiomes for environmental remediation, showing how nature-based innovation can restore polluted sites. At sea, The Scottish Association for Marine Science and its partners are unlocking the vast potential of macroalgae as a sustainable raw material, while SYMBA and SYMBIO both demonstrate the transformative potential of industrial symbiosis, where the waste or by-product of one process becomes the input for another.

A thread runs through all these initiatives: the intelligent use of data and artificial intelligence to enable faster, smarter decision-making and to optimise resource efficiency. Together, these projects illustrate how digital tools and industrial collaboration are converging to create scalable impact. Yet technology alone will not define success. The bioeconomy must be understood, trusted and embraced – by industry, by policymakers and by citizens. Communicating these stories and inspiring confidence are as crucial as the innovations themselves.

That’s why at Insight Media, we are proud to play our part in telling these stories – stories that show how Europe’s bioeconomy not only has momentum, but a clear direction of travel. The future is bio-based, and with the vision we see on these pages, that future is within our grasp if we keep our eyes firmly on the bio-based prize.
